BLOC hosts six emerging Sheffield-based artists, who in turn host a series of activities, dialogues, encounters and events, in a collaboratively curated group show aiming to explore and contest traditional relationships between gallery and artist, artist and audience. Although the role of the host may often be seen as passive mediator, relying on the interaction of the guest, the structure in which the guest is allowed to operate can be a deceptively limited environment, entirely constructed by the host to encourage a specific outcome. BLOC has invited us to exhibit based on our previous collaboration in the 2006 Sheffield Hallam graduating artists show. In response to our roles as guests, hosted by BLOC, we aim to explore social and hierarchical positions, cultural networks, hospitality, intrusion and occupation. We invite you, our guests, to consider your position in this series of encounters that seeks to be hosted and to host.
